The Benefits of Volunteering

Charleston Kids with Cameras was started in 2003, and has seen a variety of volunteers participate with the organization.  Our mission is “Creating self-confident and empowered children within the inner city through the art of photography.” It is very evident that the organization has a positive impact on not only these children, but just as much of an impact on the volunteers. The first day at the Strobel Center when we met the kids, and they showed us around their neighborhood, was a flurry of energy. When we got out there, all of the kids were so excited to take pictures and give us a tour of their stomping ground. I was hooked pretty quickly by their energy and excitement, they also showed me a new perspective, their unique way of seeing the beauty in the world around them.

There are a myriad of reasons for volunteering; to improve or acquire new skills, to do something positive with your time, to share your knowledge with others. Volunteering has so many positive benefits too; better health , happiness and less stress, improved communication skills, and leadership and organizational skills. I have seen these benefits personally, but the real reason I have been with the organization so long is because of the genius of these children. They are so enthusiastic and upbeat, their excitement affects all of our volunteers, and reminds us about the important and simple things in life.

We always welcome new volunteers to see what we are about, and see why this organization is so great. All of the volunteers have diverse backgrounds, but we have one thing in common, we want to offer our skills in a positive way. We all want to make a difference in society, and Charleston Kids with Cameras offers us a great way to do that. If you are interested in seeing what we are about, send us a message, and we would like to meet you and answer any questions.

Have a Great Day, Miss Keli, CKWC volunteer

The kids and mentors from the Meeting Street Manor went to the Yorktown yesterday for our first shoot day of 2009.  The kids were working on taking abstract photos for an upcoming exhibit at Starbucks on Calhoun Street.  They had a great time at the Yorktown and got some great abstract shots.  Geoff Marshall from The Digitel was on hand and shot some great video footage of the kids at work.  Check it out below, and stay tuned for the kid’s photos from the Yorktown.
